Salewske edged in playoff

Posted

THS sectional qualifier Troy Salewske missed out on the state experience by the barest minimum last Tuesday.

Salewske fired a 39-37-76 in a three-club wind to tie for fourth place in the WIAA Hayward Sectional, but lost out on the second hole of a 'sudden-death' playoff.

"He played his heart out," THS coach Garth Gerstenberger said. "I was very pleased he shot a good round. He could have shot 90 and been out of it. He was 1-under on the last six holes that catapulted him into the playoff. He made a 13-foot putt on 18 to get to 76."

Salewske had a major timing disadvantage when it came to that playoff, however.

"We were thinking he was in," Gerstenberger said. "He sat basically from 4:15 to 7:30. He ate supper, we walked around and then when it finally looked like there was going to be a playoff, he hit some balls.

"Out of the four guys in the playoff, the two that had just stepped off 18 won it and the two guys that waited got beat. We're talking over three hours. That's just too much."
