Richard Charles Steckel, age 89, of Merrill, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 peacefully at his home.

Richard was born October 30, 1935, in Hankinson, North Dakota to Frank and Anna (Maas) Steckel.  He graduated from Ladysmith High School, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin and later earned a B. S. degree in Industrial Arts Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He began his teaching career at Bruce High School, in Bruce, Wisconsin and then taught at the Ethan Allen School for Boys, in Wales, Wisconsin.  He spent most of his career as a teacher at Lincoln Hills School in Irma, Wisconsin where he later became an assistant principal.  During his years in education, he touched many lives with his calm and caring manner.  He married Kathryn Anderson on July 16, 1960 at the Sand Lake Chapel in Britt, Minnesota.  Rick enjoyed playing golf for much of his life. In retirement Rick and Kathy took many winter trips to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to spend time and golf with his brothers.  He was also a loyal supporter of Wisconsin and Merrill High School sports.  He especially loved travelling to Blue Jay football games to support his grandson.  He looked forward to his times at his hunting shack in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.  Rick felt fortunate for time with family and friends, which always put a smile on his face.

Richard is survived by one daughter, Karen (Breck) Buntrock; one grandson, Isaac (Lexi) Buntrock; great granddaughters, Isla and Ashlynn Buntrock, all of Merrill.  Rick is preceded in death by his dear wife of 59 years, Kathryn Steckel; his parents; four brothers; Lloyd, Frank Jr., Everett and George; two sisters; Lois and Fran.

A private family celebration of Rick’s life will be held at a later date.

Memorials can be given in Richard’s name to your local sports or youth organizations.  Any monetary gifts will be donated to Merrill Athletic Programs.
