The Merrill Youth Hockey Association kicked off their Summer Classic Tournaments this past weekend with their adult tournament. Adult players registering as individuals came from throughout Wisconsin, as well as Iowa and Michigan. They were then drafted by team captains to compete in a fun-filled event and for a chance to hoist the Summer Classic Cup, Jason Rominski, President of the Merrill Youth Hockey Association said. “Each team is sponsored by a local business and gets to choose their team’s Captain,” he said. “This year’s sponsors included The Sawmill Brewery, Burgener Contract Carriers, Coldwell Banker- Gail Abegglen, and Veritas Steel.
“Team Burgener Contract Carriers won the Adult Tournament for the second year in a row!” Rominski said. “This year’s team Captain was Merrill native Ben DeBroux. DeBroux drafted his team to include Jake Furrer (Wausau), Pat Burge (Merrill), Bryce Befort (Merrill), Eric Janke (Merrill), Jim Lawrence (Stevens Point), Ivan DeBroux (Merrill), Riley Rosengren (Merrill), Ryan Smrecek (Sioux City), Jason Hurd (Wausau), Trevor Janke (Weston), and Parker Tomczyk (Mosinee).”
The adult event was a precursor to this weekend’s Youth Summer Classic Tournament, to be held this coming weekend, Aug. 9-11, 2024 at the Merrill Area Recreation Complex. The youth will take the ice beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
“Beat the heat and come down to cheer on the kids and grab some delicious food!” Rominski said.
