Merrill Varsity Baseball falls to Marshfield in seventh inning heartbreaker

Posted

The Merrill Varsity Baseball Team traveled to Marshfield on Friday, May 2, 2025, for what would be their only game of the week after multiple weather postponements.
“It was the fourth night we tried to play and finally got it in on Friday,” said Head Coach Shawn Schultz.
In what turned into a pitcher’s duel through most of the game, the Bluejays and Tigers remained scoreless through the first four innings before Marshfield broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
“Carter Kaminski pitched really well going 5 2/3 innings and giving up only two runs,” Schultz said.
The Bluejays mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead.

“We did not hit much but took advantage of some mistakes in the top of the seventh to go up 3-2,” said Schultz.
Unfortunately for Merrill, the lead was short-lived, as Marshfield responded in the bottom of the inning.
“Things turned in the bottom of the inning as Marshfield capitalized on a few of our mistakes and scratched out the win,” Schultz said.
Brady Norton (3-1, 1 R) and Ben Thom (2-1, 1 R, 1 BB) led the Bluejays’ offense, while Cooper Wendorf (4-1) added a double. Noah Klug contributed with a stolen base, and Chris Rudie (1-1, 1 R, 1 BB) also reached base twice for Merrill.
On the mound, Carter Kaminski (5.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) delivered a strong performance before Cam Wallin (0.2 IP, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) came in for relief work in the final inning.
Despite the tough 4-3 loss, Coach Schultz is looking ahead to a busy schedule.
“It is a tough loss but we have to come back because we play five games this week with a couple of makeup games added to our schedule,” he said.

Box Score:

Merrill 3 @ Marshfield 4
