Last Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, the Merrill Girls Varsity Volleyball Team hosted SPASH for a Conference match-up on their home court and celebrated, despite losing 2-3.
“I know you might think it’s crazy to say because we lost, but this game was a very big win for us,” said Merrill Varsity Girls Volleyball Head Coach Kasie Holt. “Do I wish we would have won? Absolutely. Do I think we could have won? Of course. However, a few weeks ago when we played SPASH for the first time, they swept us with scores of 19-25, 14-25, 14-25,” she said.
“When I compare those scores and how we played tonight, I’d say that’s something to be proud of. SPASH is a tough team, and we truly fought for every point until the end. Our defense was on fire as Ava Detert picked up 21 digs, followed by Miley Krueger with 15, Maddie Robbins with 11, and Gabby Wheeler with 10.”
“Put that together with our block getting several touches to slow down the ball and Brooklyn Harding leading with four stuff blocks on the right side; we were doing very well defensively. Because our defense was running like a well-oiled machine, Kaela Clerveaux was able to end the night with 25 assists and spread the wealth along the net with kills coming from Grace Reimann (6), Kendell Klug (8), Brooklyn Harding (5), Grace Hoff (5), and Breleigh Raasch (5) - Kaela was also a threat to SPASH, collecting 6 kills of her own, leading our team with her kill percentage of .417 on the night.”
“If you read that back, every single starter was mentioned for having a great night, as it was truly a TEAM effort,” Holt said. “Everybody did their job and gave it their all, which I am so proud of. We are coming to the end of our regular season and peaking at just the right time before playoffs begin next week.”
