The Merrill Boys Varsity Wrestling Team hosted both Antigo and Wausau East high schools on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025, for a triangular and got their season off to a great start.
Merrill vs. Antigo
“We started out in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) taking on a balanced Antigo team,” said Merrill Varsity Boys Wrestling Coach Brian Suchocki. “It was good to get our first conference win [since] joining the GNC.”
“We had some ups and downs but came away with the victory,” he said. “Dusty, Brett, Hunter, and Noah all led the charge with four pins.”
“Dusty did a nice job getting us going, and Noah did a nice job finishing it off,” Suchocki said. “Remington had the match of the night, getting a tech fall against a very solid opponent.”

Kimberly Tournament
On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Merrill Varsity Boys traveled to Kimberly High School for a Varsity Tournament where they competed against Appleton North, Ashwaubenon, Berlin, Chilton, Coleman Cougars, Dodgeland, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Green Lake/Princeton, Kewaunee High School, Manitowoc Lincoln, Menasha, Shiocton, Sturgeon Bay, and Sun Prairie East.
“Remington led the way at Kimberly with a first place finish,” Suchocki said. “Remington has picked up where he left off from last year. In the offseason, Remington has put in countless hours improving his skills. It really showed in the first tournament of the year.”
“Remington was dominant on his way to the finals, and in the final match, he continued his aggressiveness. His shots are solid and he keeps moving.”
“Remington knows it is a long season,” he said, “And he will continue to work hard to achieve all his goals, but this was certainly a great start.”
“Josh also had a great showing, taking third,” Suchocki said. “I’m really excited about and proud of what Josh is doing on the mat. Josh is overpowering and adds some explosiveness. Taking third and getting the pin in the end is great for Josh.”
“Dusty battled hard all day. He took fourth place in a high-caliber tournament,” he said. “He beat some good kids but also lost to a couple. The best part is Dusty battles to the end and you can never count him out.”
“Brett took sixth in another strong weight class,” Suchocki said. “Just like Dusty, Brett battled hard all day. Brett picked up three pins, and he is right there with the best kids in his weight class.”
“Bennett came in and wrestled some Varsity for us this weekend,” he said. “I’m really excited about where Bennett is at. He is very aggressive but also has some good technique to back that up. A couple matches got away from him but he was in all of them. That is great to see. Same with Will. He is right there competing well.”
“Will is a solid wrestler and he is a move or position away from more wins,” Suchocki said.
“Even though we only took six wrestlers to the tournament ... all of our guys were in the top eight,” he said. “Number one ranked Coleman in Division 2 took first place [team scores]. It was great competition and it was a great opportunity to get our season going. The guys that wrestled did a great job all day. I’m excited for what they can do.”
