Merrill Area United Way names Deborah Moellendorf as new Executive Director

Posted

The Merrill Area United Way Board of Directors announced the hiring of Deborah Moellendorf as the new Executive Director. Moellendorf, who brings 35 years of experience with the University of Wisconsin Extension system, will begin her part-time position on March 18, 2025.
“I feel strongly about nurturing relationships with the communities and agencies I will serve,” said Moellendorf, who has deep connections throughout Lincoln County.
Moellendorf’s extensive career with UW Extension (UWEX) saw her progress from Instructor to Professor Emeritus, with her work primarily focused on 4-H youth development programs. In 2010, her responsibilities expanded to include roles as Health and Well-Being Educator and work with the MCH Title V Technical Assistance Grant Team. She has also been involved with the Lincoln County Health Plan and, as UWEX Department head, worked directly with the Lincoln County Board on budget matters.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Sociology with a Concentration in Analysis and Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she graduated with Distinction. She also holds a Master of Science in Sociology from UW-Madison.
“The Merrill Area United Way is pleased to have this individual with a strong community-oriented background and commitment take the leadership role,” said Dee Olsen, current Executive Director. “Moellendorf has many connections in the community that will help to develop the organization.”

The Board cited Moellendorf’s experience as an administrator, community coordinator, educator, presenter, researcher, and grant administrator as key qualifications that make her “a valuable choice for the Merrill Area United Way.”
Olsen said she and Moellendorf will co-direct until she leaves her role on May 2. Olsen will then have served in the role for 14 years.
“I started May 1, 2011, right after the tornado hit Merrill,” she said. “When I took the position, I had intended to do it for three years—and I’ve gone way beyond that.”
“It has been a real privilege to serve in this capacity,” Olsen said. “Merrill is a wonderful, caring, giving community. I look forward to retirement. But I know I will remain active in a few organizations I’m involved with and other various capacities.”
“This United Way has grown significantly, and I am so pleased to leave its future in the hands of a great Board of Directors and our new Executive Director, Debbie Moellendorf,” she said.
