The Merrill Lions Club and Gleason Area Lions Club will host informational booths on March 25, 2025, in recognition of National Diabetes Alert Day. Volunteers will be at Dave’s County Market and Walgreens from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to distribute materials and answer questions about diabetes prevention and management.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 30.3 million people in the United States—9.4% of the population—have diabetes. While 23 million have been diagnosed, an estimated 84.1 million have pre-diabetes. The total estimated cost of diabetes, including direct and indirect expenses, is $245 billion annually.
Diabetes is a growing health concern, and many people don’t even realize they have it. However, the earlier it is detected, the easier it is to control. Awareness is the first step in preventing and managing diabetes.
Diabetes Alert Day, observed annually on the fourth Tuesday of March, is an initiative of the American Diabetes Association. The Wisconsin Lions Foundation and local Lions Clubs are working to raise awareness across the state.
Community members unable to visit the booths can take the diabetes risk test at stopdiabetes.com/get-the-facts/risk-test.html.
“Stop by, pick up some information, and say hello,” said Dennis Knott, Lion and Diabetes Alert Chairman.
