It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Mary Catherine Grefe, who peacefully left us on November 26, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on November 4, 1943, to the late Fred and Dorothy (Hickey) Heldt. Mary graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1961. She worked various jobs while raising her family, and she retired from Pine Crest Nursing Home. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose life was defined by her unwavering love for family, her warm spirit, and her enduring passions.
Mary was a proud mother to eight children: Judy Trudell, Bob (Lori), Lynn (Jerry) Marrier, Robert (Sara), Amy (Tim) Geiger, Sarah (Greg) Schenzel, Tom, Pam (Brian) Suchocki. Her legacy lives on in her 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy and whom she cherished dearly. As a mother, she offered constant support, wisdom, and unconditional love. Her presence at family gatherings, school and sports events was a constant source of encouragement and pride. She took great joy in watching her children and grandchildren grow and thrive, always showing up to cheer them on in all of their endeavors.
A woman of many passions, Mary was an avid bridge player and enjoyed countless hours taking rides and having lunches with her dear friends, always making time for laughter, strategy, and camaraderie. She was also a dedicated fan of Wisconsin and Merrill sports, finding joy in supporting her teams and sharing that enthusiasm with those around her. Her love of Wisconsin and Merrill athletics was matched only by her love of family and community.
Mary was deeply committed to the holiday traditions that brought her family together. Whether it was preparing festive meals, or in later years micromanaging the preparations, decorating with care, or simply gathering around the table, the holidays were always brighter because of her warmth, devotion and playful spirit, making these moments memorable.
She was a friend to many, and her circle of close friends was a testament to her kindness, generosity, and ability to connect with people on a deep and meaningful level. Her friendships were a source of strength, joy, and shared laughter throughout her life.
She is further survived by her sister Lois (John) Grans, brother Ted (Rachel) Heldt, and sister-in-law Donna Heldt, lifelong friends Jeff and Darlene Hanig, along with a community of friends who will continue to honor her legacy. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Robert and her brother Fred Heldt.
