Local rock collection on display at T.B. Scott Free Library

Posted

The T.B. Scott Free Library’s Beyond Books Community ArtShare is featuring a new collection during May and June — a display of rocks, agates, gems, fossils, and other geological finds gathered by Gleason native Carter Gnewuch.
Titled “Rockhounding Treasures,” the display showcases nearly 1,000 specimens Gnewuch has collected over a lifetime of exploring riverbeds, lakeshores, and even plowed fields across Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.
Gnewuch began collecting rocks as a child and has continued the hobby into adulthood. Among his more unusual finds is yooperlite, a rock that glows orange under ultraviolet light and is found along the shores of Lake Superior.
Wisconsin offers a range of geological finds for hobbyists, including limestone, sandstone, red granite — the state rock — and galena, the state mineral.
Rockhounding requires little specialized equipment. A small shovel or scoop, a screen for sifting sand, a sturdy bag, and a UV light for spotting certain specimens are enough to get started.
The display is free and open to the public during regular library hours through the end of June.
