Lincoln County tackles shoreline erosion with stabilization projects

Posted

Shoreline stabilization projects were recently completed on Lake Nokomis, Lake Mohawksin, and Lake Alice to combat erosion and improve water quality. The efforts were funded through the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection’s (DATCP) Soil and Water Resource Management (SWRM) Program and coordinated by the Lincoln County Land Services Department.
Erosion is a growing concern for local lakes, contributing to water pollution and loss of valuable shoreline. One landowner, Troy Christensen of Lake Nokomis, experienced significant erosion on his property. “Our shoreline and the hill leading down to it were showing major signs of erosion,” Christensen said. “A neighbor mentioned a potential cost-share program through the Lincoln County Land Services Department that we could take advantage of.”
During a site visit, Lincoln County Land Services staff confirmed that Christensen had lost about eight feet of shoreline over recent years. The adjacent hillside was also near vertical, with little vegetation to hold the soil in place.
To stabilize the area, Lincoln County staff worked with DATCP to design a construction plan using rock riprap, geotextile bag walls, and native plantings. “The staff at the Lincoln County Land Services Department put together a detailed report and managed the bidding process,” Christensen said. “Once the bids came in, we chose Marquardt Excavating and Construction, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”
Christensen credited the SWRM Program for making the project possible. “We wouldn’t have been able to complete this project without the support of the Lincoln County Land Services Department and the cost-share assistance available,” he said. “The service they provide through this program is invaluable.”
In addition to shoreline stabilization, the SWRM Program funds conservation projects such as erosion control for farmers, managed grazing systems, and well decommissioning. Depending on the project, landowners may be eligible for financial assistance covering 50% to 90% of the costs.
