Lincoln County Health Department receives $10,000 grant for carbon monoxide safety

Posted

The Lincoln County Health Department recently received a $10,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in the community.
The funding will support educational efforts, public awareness campaigns, and the distribution of carbon monoxide detectors to residents. The Health Department plans to partner with local organizations to share safety information at community events and develop educational toolkits.
“Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen anywhere — in your home, garage, or even while enjoying activities like hunting, fishing, or boating,” said Shelley Cohrs, Lincoln County Health Officer. “The best way to stay safe is to make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working properly.”
Between 2019 and July 2025, the Health Department investigated 10 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in Lincoln County. Most incidents involved heaters, furnaces, boats, or gas-powered tools used indoors or in enclosed spaces. Officials say many cases could have been prevented with working detectors and proper ventilation.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced when fuels like wood, gas, oil, or charcoal burn. Exposure can cause serious illness or death.
The Health Department will collect local data throughout the project and share findings with community members. The initiative is part of Taking Action with Data, a statewide program run by the Wisconsin Environmental Public Health Tracking Program.
