John D. Thiel, 88, formerly of Merrill, died on January 4, 2025, in Stuart, Florida.
John was born in Fond du lac, WI, to Roy and Dottie Thiel. He went to high school in Fond du lac, and graduated from UW Madison Law School. He served in the Army National Guard.
John spent his career as an attorney in private practice in Merrill. He also spent 10 years as the Merrill City Attorney. John loved hunting, fishing, and tropical vacations which often included scuba diving.
John married Deborah (Goetter) Thiel and she survives. He is further survived by his children: John Thiel Jr, Michael Thiel, and Kristen (John) Schefdore, all of Merrill, as well as his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His siblings Roy Thiel of Bayfield, Gretchen Rieser of Waupaca, and Mary Thiel of Stuart, FL, as well as numerous nieces and nephews survive as well.
A private family gathering is planned for the future to celebrate his life.
