The Tomahawk boys basketball team drowned the pain of last Wednesday's 78-34 defeat to Marathon under the joy of Thursday's 55-53 overtime triumph over Athens in last week's Marathon Holiday Tournament.
The Hatchets trailed 30-20 with half of Thursday's third quarter gone, but closed the period with a 15-7 run, then out-scored the Bluejays 8-6 in the 4th to force overtime. A pair of Jared Jarvensivu three-pointers gave THS a quick lead and free throws from Kyle Bartz and Tyler Jones and defense sealed the deal.
"This was a big win for us," THS coach Tim Albert said. "We came from behind and played with great enthusiasm. We got stops down the stretch and fought through a tough shooting night from the field. I am very proud of the team for battling for 36 minutes."
Jones (19 p, 7 st, 6 r, 4 a), Bartz (7 p, 17 r, 5 bl), Andy Firkus (12 p, 7 r, 4 a), Jarvensivu (9 p, 3 a), Troy Timm (4 p, 5 r) and James Kinnally (4 bl) paced the team.
Marathon sprinted to a 26-5 lead in a quarter, and the Raiders boosted it to 43-14 and 64-25 in the next two frames.
Cody Hanke's 23 points led four Raiders in double figures.
The 9-0 Raiders are ranked 5th among state D4 teams.
Bartz (12 p, 6 r), Jones (11 p, 4 a) and Jon Nyberg (5 p, 3 r) aided the Hatchets.
Tomahawk is 3-6 on the season and 0-3 in the GNC.
