The Hatchet boys basketball team racked up a pair of non-conference wins early last week, then played solid Lakeland tight on Friday night.
A 13-3 run to start the fourth quarter was critical to last Tuesday's 50-39 triumph over Crandon.
"We did a better job rebounding in the second half and played another good defensive game," THS coach Tim Albert said. "Their zones gave us problems at times tonight, we need to execute better in the half-court in the final four games of the year.
THS production came from: Jon Nyberg (13 p, 11 r); Lorne Ahrens (8 p, 12 r); Fletcher Schoone (19 p); Jared Jarvensivu (5 r, 3 st, 9 a); Jordan Roessler (4 p); and Chris Schoone (4 p).
Tomahawk-FG: 19-44 (43%); FT: 9-12 (75%).
T-Bird squeaker
Tomahawk held a slim 33-31 after the third quarter, but a Lakeland run pushed it to 41-35 late in the fourth. A Fletcher Schoone pull-up jumper and Roessler bucket cut it to 41-39, but a pair of late free throws salted it away for Lakeland.
"It was a really exciting game, and credit Lakeland for making a couple free throws with under :30 to play," THS coach Tim Albert said. "We had a shot to tie the game, but we couldn't get a good look, as they played really well defensively down the stretch. We have really done a great job competing this year, we just need to get one of these close games to turn the corner."
THS contributions came from: Nyberg (10 p, 9 r, 3 a); Roessler (14 p); Jarvensivu (6 p, 3 st, 5 a); Ahrens (4 p, 5 r); and F. Schoone (3 p, 3 a).
Tomahawk-FG: 17-41 (41%); FT: 3-5 (60%).
Loggers rolled
THS crushed Phillips 55-36 last Monday with a 17-0 start.
"This was a great win for us, after we didn't play our best on Friday night," Albert said. "The kids played with great intensity and enthusiasm. Phillips was a hot team coming in, and I thought our defensive intensity took away their strengths tonight."
Offerings were turned in by: Jarvensivu (12 p, 5 r, 8 a); Roessler (14 p, 3 r); Nyberg (8 p, 7 r); Ahrens (6 p, 3 r, 4 st); and F. Schoone (7 p, 4 r); and C. Schoone (2 bl).
