Mrs. Melinda Burrow and her husband Ronald of Hendricks Street became the parents of the first baby of 1973 at Holy Cross Hospital. At 2:52 a.m. on January 1st Denise Johnell Burrow arrived. She is joined at home by one brother David, and two sisters Diana and Dawn.

Seven newly elected Lincoln County Officials took the oath of office on Friday in preparation for beginning their job duties on Monday. Judge Donald E. Schnabel administered the oath of office to: Dennis Montabon, new District Attorney; Ken Oldenburg, returning County Clerk; Warren Weckwerth, returning Register of Deeds; Robert Bassett, new Sheriff; Dr. T. O. Vechinski, new Coroner; Lucille Lokemoen, returning Clerk of Courts; Florian Koehler, returning County Treasurer.

The Blue Jay boys' basketball team continued their winning ways - barely, by defeating D. C. Everest on Friday night. The Jays pulled out the win 59-57 and according to the author gave the visitors plenty of opportunities in the final minutes to go home with a victory. Keith Zuelsdorff scored three key buckets while playing in relief helping down the pesky Evergreens. Merrill fans who travel to watch the Jays take on powerhouse Shawano will be in for a towering show when the Jay's 6'9" Dave Van DerGeest and Shawano center 6'10" Dennis Blunk will reach for the tip off at center court Friday night.

Tragedy struck the Merrill Community this weekend after two men were killed in separate accidents. Just after 8 p.m. New Year's Eve a vehicle being driven by 43 year old Alvin F. Magray Jr. lost control and crashed. The accident happened on State Rd 64 near Spring Brook Rd not far from Magray's home. Several hours later at 1:28 a.m. Michael Van DerGeest age 24 of 1200 7th Street Merrill was killed in a two car collision on State Rd 107 near Edgewater Drive. Three others were injured in the crash, one seriously.

The list of candidates to replace former City Clerk Robert Klug has grown to three as Lynn Jon Henrich of Mill Street has entered the race. Henrich is a graduate of Merrill Senior High School and was the 1967 Anson Scholarship winner. He went on to complete a degree in government from Notre Dame in 1972. Henrich currently works as a supervisor in the construction trade. He joins Frank Kloth and current City Clerk Judith Stockowitz on the ticket.

Although no individual champions emerged the Merrill Blue Jay wrestling team placed third in the Badger State Invitational Tournament in Madison last week. Coach Roger Wendorf noted the contest was a learning experience for his younger grapplers. Mineral Point, the defending Class C champions, won the contest. On the basketball side the Blue Jay girls team cruised to another strong win defeating the Wausau Newman Cardinals 60-38.

Clifford "Buttsy" Mosser has a letter to the editor to express his desire to have county board meetings moved to either 10 a.m. or evening meetings. Mosser points out that of the twenty two county board members fourteen are retired and the rest are either self-employed or can work around the morning meeting schedule. Mosser also notes that the noon luncheon enjoyed by board members is more of an "arm twisting" session in order to swing upcoming votes on important resolutions.

New Year's Eve entertainment advertisements include: Corky's Bar who will have D. J. Woodie, Club Modern will feature prime rib, the Fairway Supper Club will have the music of Frontier, Pattie and Jimmie will provide the music at Raoul's Bar, while the Old Time Tavern in Gleason will feature Dixie Sage. At the Cosmo Theatre you will find Steve Martin and Debra Winger starring in Leap of Faith. In Cosmo 2 Aladdin. And showing only at 9 p.m. The Distinguished Gentleman starring Eddie Murphy and in Cosmo 2 A Few Good Men with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.

A Christmas vacation basketball game between the Merrill Blue Jay boys' team and Milwaukee Bay View came down to the buzzer on Monday afternoon. With the Jays leading 67-64 Bay View's 6'6 star player Levi Bradley threw up a three point shot which slanged off the rim to preserve the win for the local boys. Brad Knab led the Jay's in scoring with 17, Bill Ott added 16 and Justin Turnquist contributed 12.
