Felzkowski criticizes Senate Democrats for blocking Special Session measures

Posted

Senate President Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) expressed frustration Tuesday after Senate Democrats declined to act on a package of proposals called by Gov. Tony Evers in Special Session, which included property tax relief, special education aid, and permanent elimination of taxes on tips and overtime pay.
Evers had called the Special Session to direct a multi-billion-dollar state surplus toward tax relief and cost-of-living measures for Wisconsin families. No Senate Democrats joined Republicans in moving the proposals forward.
“Today was extremely disappointing,” Felzkowski said in a May 13, 2026, press release. “Not even one Senate Democrat would join Senate Republicans to take real action and deliver immediate relief to Wisconsin families.”
Felzkowski said the outcome was especially striking given that Democrats were opposing their own Governor’s initiative. “For months, Senate Democrats have talked about the rising cost of living that Wisconsin families are facing,” she said. “Today, they had an opportunity to act, and they said no.”
Felzkowski argued the proposals addressed concerns she hears most from constituents. “Affordability is the number-one concern for Wisconsin families right now,” she said. “People are struggling with rising grocery bills, utility costs, and property taxes while trying to provide for their families.”
Felzkowski represents the 12th Senate District, which covers Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade, Forest, Florence, and Marinette counties, along with portions of Oconto, Shawano, and Marathon counties.
