The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced last week it will host four open houses to share information about proposed changes to the Northern Forest Zone deer management unit (DMU). The Northern Forest Zone currently includes Lincoln County, as well as neighboring Taylor and Langlade Counties, and the county lines of these counties form part of the boundary line between the Central Farmland Zone. The Northern Forest Zone also includes all of Douglas, Bayfield, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, Ashland, Iron, Vias, Sawyer, Rusk, Price, Vilas, Oneida, Forest, and Florence Counties, along with portions of Marinette, Oconto, and Chippewa Counties. “This year’s review is focused on the management units in the Northern Forest Zone, the Metropolitan subunits, and the boundary lines between the Central Forest and Farmland Zones,” a release from the DNR said.
Deer management unit boundaries are reviewed by the DNR every few years, they said.
The open house meetings are an opportunity to learn about the specific proposals being considered and “the key metrics that go into the decision-making process and the proposed boundary changes being considered,” and talk to DNR staff. Some history of DMUs in Wisconsin will also be presented.
Three of the scheduled open houses will be held “in-person” in Woodruff, Cable, and Adams, Wis., respectively, and a fourth open house will be a virtual event held via Zoom for any interested parties.
