Daniel P. Catlin, 58, of Gleason, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at Ministry St. Clare's Hospital in Weston.
Dan was born Sept. 29, 1952, in Merrill, son of Jean (Kleinschmidt) Catlin and the late Jerome Catlin. He married Diana Keeney on Sept. 3, 1977, in Great Lakes, IL. She survives.
Dan served in the United States Navy. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Center for basic training and two shore-duties. He then was stationed at Naval Base San Diego, NAS Lemore, CA, and Naval Base Norfolk, VA. Dan had served on the USS Fresno (LST-1182), USS Constellation (CVA-64), USS Charleston (LKA-113), and USS El Paso (LKA-117). He was honorably discharged on July 15, 1992. Dan was a member of V.F.W. Post 1638 - Merrill; American Legion Post 56, where he was also a Commander; Disabled American Veterans; Am Vets; and the Navy Club. Dan enjoyed watching Monday night "Wrestling," snowmobiling, bowling, camping and campfires, playing cribbage and poker, the occasional casino trip, and attending "Catlin Family Reunions." He especially enjoyed nicknaming his nieces and nephews, who affectionately called him "Lunka Dan." Dan was also a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Catlin, of Gleason; his mother, Jean Catlin, of Merrill; sons, Jay Catlin, of Norfolk, VA, and Daniel J. (Melissa Butler) Catlin, of Merrill; granddaughter, Alyssa Catlin; one grandchild on the way; step grandsons, Tyler and Jacob Butler; sisters, Sharon Waldburger, of Whitwell, TN, Sandra (Jeffrey) Krueger, of Hamburg, and Suzanne Catlin, of Kenosha; brothers, David Catlin and Daren (Sue) Catlin, both of Merrill; many nieces and nephews; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Jerome Catlin.
The memorial service will be at Noon, on Friday, Jan. 7, at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill. Pastor Missy Holdorf will officiate. Military Rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill. The family will receive friends at the church Friday beginning at 10 a.m. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements.
