The Merrill Varsity Boys Baseball Team opened their four-game week with a tough Bluejay loss to Wausau West on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Merrill’s Athletic Park. In the first game of a doubleheader with the Warriors, West’s left-handed pitcher Teske kept the Bluejays’ offense in check throughout the contest, scattering just four hits over six innings while striking out seven.
“We ran into a tough lefthander in Teske in game one,” said Merrill Head Coach Shawn Schultz. “We had some opportunities, but anytime we got guys on base, he was able to toughen up and get out of the jam.”
Despite the loss, Merrill starter Carter Kaminski (4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 SO) worked effectively on the mound, keeping the Bluejays within striking distance while throwing 99 pitches.
“Carter did a good job of keeping us in the game on the mound as well,” said Schultz. “We need to make the routine plays in tight games like this one, because they can be the difference in the score.”
The Bluejays bounced back with authority in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, pounding out 13 runs in a victory over Wausau West.
“We were the visitor in game two though we were in Merrill,” said Schultz. “We knocked their starter out early and did a good job of putting consistent guys on base. The offense has been pretty good lately.”
The Bluejays continued their winning ways on Saturday, April 26, riding a dominant pitching performance from Cam Wallin (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 SO) and a sixth-inning offensive eruption to a road victory over the Onalaska Hilltoppers.
“It was a pitchers’ duel through five innings. There were not a lot of real opportunities for either team up to that point,” said Schultz.
The Bluejays finally broke the deadlock. “In the sixth, Kory Page (3-for-4, 2 R) led off with a single and EJ Weix (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) doubled to put runners on second and third, and Kaiden Henrich (2-for-3, 2 RBI) came up with a big two-run single,” said Schultz. “We added one more in the sixth and three more in the seventh to get to six.”
Wallin was masterful on the mound, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just four hits. Noah Klug (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) closed out the victory with a scoreless seventh.
The Bluejays completed their impressive 3–1 week with a victory over Waunakee in the second game of Saturday’s road trip.
