The 2024-2025 drive for new backpacks and school supplies for students in need is underway, and the need for backpacks and school supplies is great.
More than 500 students in grades K-8 qualify for free backpacks and supplies under federal guidelines for free and reduced lunch.
Donated items can be dropped off at Incredible Bank (formerly River Valley Bank) and Walgreens. Please note: Used items cannot be accepted for this project.

New supplies most needed this year are the larger backpacks themselves; 1” binders with a front pocket; chisel tip dry erase markers; colored pencils; wide washable markers in classic colors; 3” x 3” post it notes; paper folders; and wide lined notebooks in green, red, purple, and blue; and over-ear headphones. Supply donations will be accepted now through Friday, August 9, 2024.
Distribution is set for Saturday, August 10, from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Prairie River Middle School cafeteria by door 14. Eligible families will receive more information in the mail. Students will be able to select their backpack and a few other items. Basic supplies like pencils, etc., will be pre-packaged for quick pick-up.
Tax-deductible donations are accepted year round and can be mailed to: MFTHCI-Backpacks, PO Box 793, Merrill WI 54452.
The project is sponsored by: Merrill Forward Together Healthy Community Initiative (MFTHCI), Children’s Wisconsin, and the Optimists.
For more information, call Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services at 715.539.9228.
