It’s that time of year again: Time for a day of free outdoor winter fun for families at the Merrill School Forest.
Merrill Area Public Schools (MAPS) and the Friends of the Merrill School Forest will hold their annual Merrill School Forest Family Fun Day on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—and everything included is absolutely free, including the food.
This is “a chance for families to enjoy the great outdoors and try different winter activities,” organizers said. And it’s especially a great time to explore all that the Merrill School Forest has to offer.
The day will include free equipment rentals so families can come out to participate in and enjoy snowshoeing and cross country skiing through the Merrill School Forest (last departure at 2 p.m.). And there will be sledding and human foosball, plus a campfire to warm up and roast some marshmallows.
Explore the outdoor Wisconsin Logging History Museum, tour the Animal Museum, and check out the Cordwood Education Center.
Participate in scheduled events:
• 1-2 p.m. inside the lodge, Wild Instincts “Where the Wild Things Heal” from Rhinelander will give a presentation with live animals.
• 11 a.m.-12 p.m. there will be a live historic logging demonstration with Steve Lee and his horses outside in the lower parking lot.
• 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. inside the main lodge there will be free lunch/snacks available.
The Merrill School Forest is located on Hwy 107 (10 miles north of Merrill) across from Camp New Wood County Park. The Google-approved GPS address is: N4740 State Hwy. 107, Merrill. Parking at the School Forest is limited, but parking is available across the road at Camp New Wood County Park.
Note: Cell phones rarely work in the area.
This event is subject to change or be cancelled due to harsh weather and/or lack of snow, organizers said. Updates and/or cancellations will be posted on the “Merrill School Forest” Facebook page.
