The contents of an open-top trailer being pulled behind a vehicle erupted into flames on Monday morning, Oct. 10, 2022, around 9:00 a.m. in Merrill’s downtown shopping area. Initially, the small flames were attacked with a handheld fire extinguisher while the vehicle and trailer were parked in front of the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store on E. Main St. in Merrill. That proved ineffective.
Law enforcement responded to the scene and the vehicle and trailer were then pulled forward into the intersection of S. Poplar St. (??) and E. Main St. to distance the fire from around buildings as the blaze in the trailer intensified and flames grew higher. The Merrill Fire Department and Ambulance responded to the scene, helped block off traffic, and then Merrill Fire Department firefighters extinguished the blaze with water and foam.

Firefighters from the Merrill Fire Department extinguished the blaze at the intersection of Poplar and E. Main Streets.
A view of Merrill’s downtown E. Main Street business district, as firefighters extinguish the blaze that caused a little extra commotion, not typical for a Monday morning on Main Street in Merrill.
