MERRILL POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORTS

11-15-2021

At 10:07 a.m. an officer responded to the Merrill Hydro Dam for a property damage complaint. It was discovered that a glass bottle filled with rocks was thrown through a window. The investigation is ongoing.

At 3:53 p.m. an officer responded to the probation and parole office to take a male party into custody on a probation violation. The male was arrested on the probation violation and taken to the jail.

At 1:32 p.m. officers were dispatched to the Northern Achievement Center (NAC) building for a report of a juvenile assaulting a staff member. Officers arrived on scene and spoke with the juvenile and staff members. The report indicated the juvenile breaking a window and punching a staff member at NAC. The juvenile will be referred to social services for battery and damage to property.

At 6:00 p.m. officers were dispatched to a theft at a local department store. Officers were able to make contact with the suspect. The suspect admitted to stealing a watch and two pairs of ear buds. The suspect was arrested for retail theft and three counts of felony bail jumping.

At 7:52 p.m. officers were dispatched to a shoplifting complaint at a local department store. The report was that two male individuals stole two portable speakers. One of the suspects drove off in a black Chevy Equinox and was stopped by officers at a nearby gas station. Officers located both stolen speakers from the suspect’s vehicle. The other suspect was detained by Asset Protection staff at Wal-Mart. Both parties involved were arrested for retail theft intentionally take <$2500 asparty to a crime. There are other charges brought against both parties as well.

At 1:36 p.m. a caller reported being the victim of a scam. The caller reported that the previous day he had received a phone call from someone claiming to be affiliated with Amazon.com. The person told him that someone had made several charges on his account which were not authorized. He was told to go to purchase Ebay gift cards for $500 to send them to keep his account safe. The man purchased one gift card in the amount of $100 and provided it to the scammers.

At 8:43 p.m. an officer on patrol observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot of a tavern by accelerating rapidly causing the tires to squeal. The vehicle then crossed both lanes of travel, causing another vehicle to brake suddenly. The driver of the vehicle displayed characteristics of intoxication. The driver agreed to field sobriety tests and as a result of those tests, was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

At 6:58 a.m. a caller reported hearing a whining/sobbing sound throughout the night but did not know where it was coming from and was concerned someone was in need of help. The sound was found to be coming from a neighbor’s dog who was fine.

At 7:32 a.m. an officer on patrol stopped a vehicle after finding the registered owner had a revoked driver’s license and warrant for his arrest. The driver was the registered owner, and he displayed characteristics indicative of intoxication. He refused to submit to field sobriety tests and was arrested for operating while intoxicated (4th offense), operating while revoked due to OWI, and the warrant through Lincoln County.

At 8:30 a.m. it was reported a male adult at a school had yelled profanities at staff while in the parking lot, in the presence of students. The man later spoke to an investigator claiming he had a first amendment right to use such language. He was informed that he could not use such language in public, in the presence of youths. He was referred to the District Attorney’s office for disorderly conduct and bail jumping.

At 11:06 a.m. an officer assisted the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in arresting a party on a probation violation.

At 2:44 p.m. officers arrested a male party who had an extraditable warrant out of the state of Arkansas.

At 4:42 p.m. officers took a report of party violating terms of their active bond as well as a standing restraining order. Investigation is ongoing.

At 7:29 p.m. officers took a report from a party who believed they had acquired a fraudulent $100 bill from a local department store. Upon further investigation, it was determined the money was genuine and not fraudulent currency.

At 11:49 p.m. officers were called to a two-vehicle crash involving a parked car. In investigating the incident, it was determined the driver of the striking vehicle was intoxicated, and they were arrested for operating while intoxicated (3rd offense), as well as issued citations for operating with a suspended driver’s license and for lack of motor vehicle insurance.

At 5:57 p.m. officers took a report regarding the alleged theft of a six-pack of Mountain Dew from a local resident. Investigation is ongoing.

At 8:39 p.m. officers took a report of a possible missing person from the Wausau area from a Merrill resident. The alleged missing person was learned to have recently moved to an undisclosed location in the greater Milwaukee area from the Wausau metro area and since doing so had not been in routine communication with the caller. As a result of the investigative actions taken, it was determined the case had no connections to the City of Merrill.It was recommended that a report be made to the Milwaukee Police Department in order to check the party’s welfare, should they be located by area law enforcement.

At 12:23 p.m. officers were called to a local department store to check on the welfare of a party sleeping in their vehicle. Officer made contact with the party and learned he was driving from Arizona to a gathering in the area.
