A 62-year old Merrill man was injured as a result of a house fire which occurred on E. Riverside Avenue, early Friday morning, Feb.7.
According to a press release issued by the Merrill Fire Department, “Just before 1 a.m. Friday morning, the Merrill Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on the 100 block of East Riverside Avenue in the City of Merrill.
“MFD responded immediately to the scene with Engine-61, Truck-63, and Medic-61. Upon arrival, the crew found heavy black smoke coming out of the front window, door, and eves. The owner of the home was outside already and confirmed that there was no one else inside the building. Firefighters went to work extinguishing the blaze and trying to limit the damage. Off-duty Merrill firefighters responded to the scene with Squad-64 and Utility-68. Merrill Police Department, Corning Fire Department, Merrill Street Department, and Wisconsin Public Service also assisted on scene. Tomahawk EMS provided ambulance coverage during the incident.
“The fire was originally reported by a neighbor who smelled smoke and heard someone yelling for help. The owner of the home tried to extinguish the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department and in doing so suffered some injuries. The 62 year old male patient was transported by Merrill Fire Department ambulance to Ascension Good Samaritan Hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known at this time. The Merrill Fire Department is continuing to investigate the cause of this fire, but there is nothing suspicious at this time.”
