Some people shave their heads because it is a good look, while others do it because it saves them money on hair care products. Jack Zamzow, Nathan Woller and Trenton Lokemoen are shaving their heads for a much more noble cause. They are shaving each other’s heads for St. Baldrick’s, a charity foundation for funding childhood cancer research. Because many children lose their hair during cancer treatment, the “shavees” show their support by voluntarily shaving their heads and inspiring friends and family to donate money.
Jack Zamzow, a cancer survivor, has been shaving his head and raising money since 2008. He has currently raised over 9,000 dollars and hopes to reach 10,000 dollars by the end of the year.
“I shaved my head because I’ve had cancer and I know how hard it is,” says Jack Zamzow. “It’s not fun so I want there to be a cure found so that cancer can be eliminated.”
Jack was diagnosed with Stage 3 High Risk Neuroblastoma when he was two and a half years old in 2005. He went through numerous rounds and types of treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplants and surgery until 2006 when he completed all of his treatments. He receives check-ups every six months and as of September 2005 has shown no evidence of the disease.
Joining Jack are his friends Nathan Woller and Trenton Lokemoen. Nathan has been shaving his head for as long as Jack has, while this is Trenton’s first year doing it.
“I shaved my head to raise money for childhood cancer research,” says Nathan. “I think it’s a very important thing to raise money for because cancer is not a good thing to have.”
“I had a lot of fun getting my head shaved,” adds Trenton. “I wanted to help raise money for childhood cancer research and I had fun while doing it.”
