The Hatchets swimmers jumped into a new season with three meets in five days, highlighted by a third-place finish in Saturday’s 7-team Hodag Relays.
“It’s nice to know that the loss of key seniors from last season, and the addition of quite a few brand new swimmers this year has not hurt us in the least” THS coach Marion Kohl said. “Most exciting was the first-ever, first place finish at this meet. We’ve been attending the Hodag Relays for many years.”
The 400 IM team of Aslan Thinkohkaew, Parker Knipfer, Peyton Hamm and Logan Loretz won in 4:51.12. Loretz, Nate Goehe and Knipfer took 2nd place in the 150 ‘Mixer’ relay in a time of 1:32.98.
Superior won with 54 points and Rhinelander edged out Tomahawk 41-39 for second, while Shawano (38) and Marshfield (37) were close behind. A complete lack of disqualifications made the difference for the Hatchets.
Hodag reprise
The Hatchets lost an 88-72 meet in Rhinelander on Thursday. Thinkohkaew – a foreign exchange student – won both the 500 free (6:00.54) and 100 back (1:07.27).
Seconds came from: Loretz (50 free, :24.80/100 fly, 1:12.81); Knipfer (200 IM, 3:07.23); P.J. Ehn (100 free, 1:05.42); and Hunter Langdon (100 brea, 1:23.17).
“It was a really great, close meet!” Kohl said.
THS also placed 2nd and 3rd in each relay.
Season starter
Shawano captured a 105-65 meet last Tuesday.
“The Hawks are traditionally a strong, large team and this year is no exception,” Kohl said.
Loretz took the 50 free with a solid early-season time :25.08. Runner-up finishes came from: Thinkohkaew (100 fly, 100 back, both against Shawano’s best swimmer Zach Soper); Goehe (in his first H.S. 500 free); Langdon (100 brea). All three relays placed second.
