A 28-point second quarter propelled the Tomahawk varsity football team to a huge 41-6 triumph at Phillips.
Tomahawk improved to 1-3 overall and in the Marawood Football Conference by pounding out 415 yards of offense.
“This was a big win for the Hatchets,” THS coach John Larson said. “It sure felt good to put one in the win column and accomplish that on the road.
“The Hatchets dominated from the start, had a big second quarter and took a 34-6 lead in halftime. On offense, the Hatchets ground game was dominant led by the Borchardt brothers (Jake and Dane). The Hatchets would amass 341 yards on the ground and another 74 through the air.
“Defensively, the Hatchets were very solid as well. This was a big step forward, both offensively and defensively.”
Both teams ran 43 plays, but Tomahawk out-gained Phillips 415-93. Jake Borchardt racked up 179 yards in just 11 carries-at 16.3 yards per carry-while scoring three touchdowns. Dane picked 100 yards on 17 carries and scored once.
The Hatchets took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on Dane’s 8-yard run and an unsuccessful two-point conversion. Phillips tied it up early in the second on a 30-yard dash from M. Neerdaels. But a short time later, the rout was on. Quarterback Kaleb Kaminski scored on a 5-yard blast, and Jake capped it off. Jake then rattled off touchdown runs of 7, 32 and 52 yards, and Kaminski converted the two-point conversions on the latter two for the 34-6 margin.
Aaron Leonhard took the ball 9 yards to paydirt in the third quarter, and also kicked the extra point.
Kaminski completed 4-of-5 passes for 74 yards including 2 apiece to Dakota Thompson (50 yds.) and Lorne Ahrens (24). He also picked up 26 yards on 5 carries.
Kaminski (4 solos, 3 assists, 1 PBU) also led the defense and was assisted by: Jacob Schaper (2 S, 2 A, 1 sack, 1 PBU); Borchardt (3 S, 3 A); John Rupel (1 S, 1 A, 1 FF, 1 FR); Steve Renn (1 S, 3 A, 1 int.); Leonhard (1 S, 3 A); Borchardt (2 S, 1 A); Schoone (1 S, 3 A); and Ahrens 1 S, 1 A, 1 PBU).
