August T. Krueger, 25, of Tomahawk, was arraigned in Lincoln County Court Monday on a charge of first degree murder. Bail was set at $35,000. Krueger is being charged with the murder of his 16 year old cousin, Diane Lynn Krueger also of Tomahawk on the morning of July 28th at the Camp New Woods campgrounds. According to the complaint filed in Lincoln County Court against Krueger, the body of the young girl was found floating in the Wisconsin River at about noon on Saturday and was identified by Erwin Krueger as his daughter Diane. An autopsy later concluded that the girl’s death was caused by drowning.
The crowning of the 4-H Queen highlighted the first day of the Lincoln County 4-H Fair on Tuesday. Sally Fruend, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Fruend, was selected from a field of 16 entries by the judges as 4-H Queen. She will act as the hostess during the fair and will participate in 4-H activities throughout the year. The new queen will also receive a $25 check. Mrs. Robert Gruling, Route 4, Merrill, took the Best of Show top award with an arrangement of goats beard, pine, evergreen and cattails. The Park Valley Garden Club Best of Show award winner selected by judges Norton Leaps and Mrs. Lydia Schauss was entered into the holiday arrangement class.
The first Merrill retailer to deliver the bad news to the children is Campbell’s Clothes Store; it’s back to school sales time. Girls’ dresses start at $3.99 with slacks and jeans being priced between $2.99 and $6.99. On the boys’ side, jeans start at $3.99 and shirts are priced at $2.50 and up. Getting ready for the fall sports, State Representative Dave Obey is proposing a bill that would require the NFL to broadcast Packer and Viking games that are sold out at least 48 hours before game time. Obey will co-sponsor the bill with Congressman Stanford Parris (R-VA) to prohibit the blacking out of games that are sold out. Obey fears pro football could go the way of boxing if the NFL is allowed to continue barring telecasts of sold out games.

Joseph Kasmierski, 23, of Bridge Street in Tomahawk, has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease in the shooting death of Ronald Dittmer, 29, of rural Tomahawk. Kasmierski faces a first degree murder charge after the incident took place June 20 in the City of Tomahawk. The plea was entered by Karmierski’s attorney Richard Olson after Judge Michael Nolan determined that there was sufficient evidence to establish a felony was committed in the county. Those testifying at this morning’s hearing included Captain Ed Ziert of the Tomahawk Police Department, Kirk Kind, a Tomahawk EMT, and Dr. Robert Huntington, the UW Madison pathologist who performed the autopsy.

Merrill had a unique visitor last Thursday as a Gordon Stevenson and his “Texan” or North American Trainer – AT6 flew into the Merrill Municipal Airport. Stevenson is from Dallas, Texas and stopped at Merrill to visit his aunt Dorothy Averill before heading to the EAA Fly In in Oshkosh. Gordon and his friend acquired the WWII Trainer which was built in 1941; it was one of 17,000 built to train pilots during WWII. Before leaving Merrill, Stevenson had to buzz the nearby home of Roy Eckes on his way to Oshkosh. Eckes worked on military planes at Weisbaden, Germany during the war.
Hurd Millwork is nearing completion of its 40,000 square foot expansion. The expanded area will house the double hung window production line and will expand the shipping department to include five new loading docks. The project began in May and should be completed in September.
