Lincoln School observed its 50th anniversary this past Monday with a program at the school. Four former teachers were honored as the students sang songs, put on a one act play and gave a history of the school to those assembled. The first building erected at 1st Street and Center Ave, it was one of three buildings at the time in the village of Jenny and was meant to accommodate all of the children in the area. It was known as the second ward school. During the 1880’s the increase in population called for the construction of a new building at the corner of 2nd and Park St. The second building was a two story structure that held six grades. Students would go into the woods to the north of the school and gather firewood which was used to heat the building. The present building was built in 1922 and held a kindergarten and six grades but by 1953 the population had outgrown the school and an addition was put on the south end of the school. (The building was demolished years ago at the site of the present Walgreen’s store).
The DNR reports deer registration is down for the Merrill Ranger Station so far for the gun deer season. Only 155 deer have been registered through Monday compared with 236 for the same time last year. The numbers in Tomahawk are even worse with 19 deer registered through Monday compared to 296 last year. Pictured on page three is Vernon Borchardt of Route 1, Hamburg. He downed an eleven point buck near Hamburg Saturday which dressed out at 230 pounds. Borchardt was entering his deer in the buck contest at Bill’s House of Guns when pictured.
The Merrill Blue Jay Basketball team has two games under their belts in this young season. On Thursday night they lost to Stevens Point Pacelli. Twenty one turnovers turned out to be the difference in the contest which was decided by two points in overtime. On Saturday night the Jays beat out Wisconsin Rapids by a score of 63-56. Rick Semling was the floor leader in the game.

The cost of chasing down runaways from Lincoln Hills School in Irma is proving costly to Lincoln County. State Senator Clifford Krueger and State Representative Sheehan Donoghue met with members of the law enforcement committee last week to discuss the problem. According to Detective Dave Haskins 89 runaways were reported so far this year. Most students were walk-aways after being granted furloughs, but they cost the Sheriff’s Office $377 in bookwork alone. A more costly case involved a 14 year old who ran from the facility and committed 70 new crimes while AWOL. The Sheriff’s Office assigned three deputies to work the case full time for days costing them $720 in overtime alone. Haskins and Chief Deputy Harvey Woodward noted those costs don’t even include the cost of prosecuting the youths and their future incarceration.
Christmas specials are starting to fill the pages and Merrill House of Music has two full pages of bargains. An RCA video disc player is only $349, an RCA Color-Trak 25″ television sale priced at $699, an Odyssey2 home video game system starts at $129.95 and a Magnavox SkyWalker AM/FM portable radio that includes a shoulder strap and belt clip is only $47.95.
Despite winning 66-53 over Wisconsin Rapids Assumption Merrill Blue Jay’s girls basketball coach Bob Yuska was not impressed. He noted the team dribbled too much, didn’t pass enough, and had too many turnovers. Despite the sloppy play Yuska noted he was impressed by the score leaders which included three who had double figures.

Milwaukee Brewer superstar Paul Molitor gave a rousing speech last Wednesday to a large group assembled at D. C. Everest about baseball, substance abuse, and religious commitment. This was part of a four city tour for the Fellowship of Christian Athlete’s / Stop Substance Abuse benefit tour. Molitor noted despite his own prowess on the field his favorite moments of his career revolve around Robin Yount’s 3000 hit crusade. After his talk Molitor signed autographs for two hours for a host of patient fans, one of them pictured with the Brewer stand out is Jay Proft Jr. of Merrill.
There is plenty of entertainment for both the hunters and the hunters’ widows on the entertainment page. Rod and Gun Club and the Zoo in Gleason will each be hosting a Hunter’s Ball. Holly Times Bazaar will be at the T. B. Scott Mansion hosted by the Good Samaritan Health Center Auxiliary and Old Time Tavern in Gleason is offering free tap beer between 6-7 p.m. this Friday through Sunday.
