Harry William Schweigert was called to his Eternal Home on April 8, 2012, at the age of 89.
Harry was born on December 2, 1922, in the Town of Corning, Lincoln County, to William and Martha (Kirschner) Schweigert.
Growing up, Harry farmed alongside his parents. He was a charter member of the Corning All-Stars 4-H Club. Harry also worked in the lumber camps during his teen years. He worked at both the Natzke-Scheu Lumber Camp in Upper Michigan and at the Underwood Lumber Co. in Rib Lake, Wisconsin.
Harry attended the rural Iwen School in the Town of Corning, and later graduated from Merrill High School. While at Merrill High School, he was on the high school boxing team. After graduating high school, he served as a Deputy Sheriff for Lincoln County before enlisting in the United States Army. Harry was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Entering the Army as a Private, Harry rose through the ranks – retiring after 34 years of service to his country with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After retiring from the Army, Harry worked for Wausau Insurance Company in Milwaukee as a claims adjuster. He and Doris later moved to Two Rivers, Wisconsin, where Harry was employed at Hillhaven Nursing Facilities as plant operations manager. Upon his retirement, he and Doris moved back to Merrill to enjoy retirement.
During his life, Harry was a member of many organizations. He was a life member of American Legion Post #93; life member of 40ET 8 Volture Locale #1156; Co-Founder, former Commander, and life member of AMVETS Post 2000; Past-Commander and life member of DAV Chapter #29; life member of National Order of Trench Rats (DAV) Dugout #598; life member of National Association of Atomic Veterans; life member of Military Officers Association of Americas; life member of Military Officers Association of N.E. Wisconsin; charter member and life member of WWII Museum; life member of VFW Post #2687; Past-President of Lincoln County Veterans Council; member of 32nd Division (Red Arrow) Veterans Association; life member of 32nd Division (Red Arrow), Old Timers; counselor for 12 years with the Military Youth Camp (Medical section) at Fort McCoy; former Master of Ceremonies for Veterans Day programs at Merrill schools; former Master of Ceremonies for Memorial Day programs; member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #5; Past-Master of Wm. Kahlenberg Lodge #200; perpetual member and Past-Master Virginia Falls Lodge #226; member of 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Eau Claire Yorkrite Mason; charter member of Beja Shriners Green Bay; and member of local Timer Shrine.
On June 21, 1947, Harry married the love of his life, Doris J. Woller, at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Together they raised four children, Lynn, Guy, Kim, and Todd. Harry and Doris were blessed with nine grandchildren and many friends.
Harry really enjoyed life. He was involved with various activities and hobbies. Harry loved doing woodworking and helping Doris with her gardens. He took great pleasure in time spent working on various Veteran functions and the Veteran programs in the Merrill schools. Harry especially enjoyed spending time with Doris, his children, grandchildren, and many friends.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha Schweigert; his wife, Doris; one brother, David Guy Schweigert; five sisters, Myrtle, Star, Elizabeth, Yvonne, and Mae; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Martha Woller.
Survivors include his four children, two sons, Guy (June) Petersen-Schweigert, of Mosinee, and Todd (Fran) Schweigert, of Batavia, IL; two daughters, Lynn Reinke, of Neenah, and Kim Schweigert, of Manitowoc; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, William ‘Buddy’ Schweigert, of Cincinnati, OH; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 12, 2012, at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. Pastor Missy Holdorf will officiate. Burial will take place at Snow Hill Cemetery, Town of Scott, with graveside conducted by the Tomahawk Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and after 9:00 A.M. Thursday at the church. A Masonic service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
