The Hatchet swimmers finished dead in the middle of Saturday’s seven-team GNC Meet at Medford, but Marlee Kiander set one of five new conference records with a 1:09.53 in the 100 breaststroke.
Kiander won the event by greater than 3-1/2 seconds, and also earned a runner-up finish in the 100 free in :56.97, behind a record-setting :55.38 by Lakeland’s Carolyn Kelk.
The 200 free team of Hannah Schmit, Michaela Galganski, Sami Kleich and Kainder was 2nd in 1:50.69.
“Overall, we had hoped to score 175 points and we finished with 172 and a 4th place finish,” THS coach Theresa L’Esperance said. “We were the smallest school on the pool deck and couldn’t even fill out our events. Last year we finished 5th, so we will continue our focus on moving up in the next few years.
“We swam a great meet, 18 personal records! Marlee also went undefeated in 3 years in her (100 brea) event, a feat many others fail to acknowledge.”
The 200 medley squad of Katherine Russell, Kiander, Maki, and Schmit ranked 4th in 2:01.31.
Maki swam 5th in the 100 fly (1:11.44). Russell was 5th in the 200 IM (2:36.69), and 6th in the 500 free (6:12.43). In the 100 fly, Maki (1:13.59) and Kleich (1:14.37) were 7-8. Galganski rated 7th in the 50 free (:28.18), and 9th in the 100 brea (1:23.30).
The 200 medley group of Kleich, Galganski, Taylor Hansen and Jamie Sterr was 7th in 2:13.44. In the 400 free, the squad of Schmit, Kleich, Maki and Russel placed 8th (4:19.85) and the team of Cassie Silvernale, Sam Schaper, Mary Galloy and Sterr was 10th (4:32.21). That latter crew placed 9th in the 200 free (2:02.08). Schmit (10th, 100 free, 1:04.09) and Sterr (12th, 200 IM, 2:50.82) also scored.
