The Mosinee Indians came to play the Merrill Bluejays under the Friday night lights last Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, and took home a win.
Mosinee is a tough football team, and the Merrill Varsity Football Team had their work cut out for them from the start when Mosinee scored a touchdown on a two-yard run and a good kick in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Mosinee again made it into the endzone with an eight-yard pass, and the kick was good, bringing the score to Mosinee 14-Merrill 0.
Then Merrill got on the board with an exciting 37-yard run into the endzone and a touchdown of their own. The kick was good, and the score: Mosinee 14-Merrill 7. But before half-time, Mosinee had landed another one. This time a three-yard pass and another good kick put the score at Mosinee 21-Merrill 7.
Coming back into it after the half, the Bluejays made the lone score of the third quarter – a touchdown on a 17-yard pass, but the kick was no good. Mosinee 21-Merrill 13.
In the fourth quarter, the Indians were back in the endzone with the final score of the night. Mosinee sealed the deal with a 20-yard pass for a touchdown and a good kick. Final game score: Mosinee 28-Merrill 13.
The Merrill Bluejays are 2-1 for the season but now stand at 0-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference after losing this one, their first Conference game.
“We need to find a way to come out faster in important games against tough opponents,” said Jason Wadzinski, Head Coach of the Merrill Varsity Football Team. “Our boys fought hard for 48 minutes, but Mosinee executed better when it mattered.”
The Boys will be back on the field in Medford this Friday night to play against the Raiders.
