The Merrill High School Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to Lakeland Union High School for their first game of the season last Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, and took a tough loss. While goalie Matthew Holloway and the teamwork of the Merrill team resulted in some great saves throughout the game, the scoreboard found the guys on the short side of the 8-0 final score.
“[But] Our boys did better than the score would suggest,” said Merrill Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach Casey Burmeister. “They kept their enthusiasm up and showed valuable potential.”
“Lakeland has a good team, including many honorable mentions and a first team pick from last year,” he said. “Lakeland also did very well in their communication on the field, and that is a key area we aim to improve. This game was a learning game for us, and I know we’ll move on stronger.”
Looking forward, the team has two games this week, both home games at Jay Stadium. On Tuesday, Sept. 2, they play Shawano, and on Thursday, Sept. 4, the Merrill Boys will play Stevens Point beginning at 7 p.m.
