Merrill Varsity Bluejay Football players traveled to Hayward last Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, for another tough game. In the first quarter, Hayward got things started with a touchdown and scored 7 pointswhile Merrill remained scoreless. Then in the second quarter Hayward made another touchdown, but the kick was no good, and the score jumped by another 6. The next time around, they fared better, though, scoring a touchdown and making the kick, as well. By halftime, Merrill was down 20 points, having failed to score.
Both teams remained scoreless in the entire second half of the game, and Merrill suffered a defeat.
“We were a handful of miscues away from making this a very close game,” Merrill Varsity Football Head Coach Jason Wadzinski said. “The Bluejay defense kept them out of the endzone in the second half, but we weren’t able to get the production from the other side of the ball yet.”
During the game #102 Jacob Schmeltzer made 102 passing yards, #20 Callum Wheeler got in 25 rushing yards, and #2 EJ Weix racked up 34 receiving yards.
“Hayward played a nice game and earned the victory,” Wadzinski said. “We will regroup as a team and look to put it all together on Saturday for Homecoming.”
