Alfred E. Schmidt

Alfred E. Schmidt, 89, of Merrill, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill. Alfred was born September 13, 1933, in Merrill, son of the late Alfred J. and Florence (Paquett) Schmidt. Alfred enlisted in the Army National Guard on October 23, 1950, and was honorably discharged on November 27, 1951. In 1952, Alfred purchased a small dairy farm near his family and ran that farm for twelve years. In 1964, he purchased a larger dairy farm in the Town of Pine River and ran that for many years. Alfred also owned and operated Merrill Pavers in Merrill for 31 years and was a self-employed logger. Alfred married Joan Sutte and together they had ten children. He then married Angeline (Kafkas) Woytasik, and she preceded him in death on September 22, 2000. Alfred married Louise (Jones) Peterson on January 2, 2003, in Bessemer, Michigan. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2019. Alfred enjoyed hunting, polka dancing, and the occasional game of golf. He really enjoyed his job and made many friends through his business. Alfred was a very caring person and a great friend. His greatest loves were God, his family, and his country.

Alfred is survived by his children, Tim (Cassie) Schmidt of Merrill; Kary (Nichole) Schmidt of Tomah, Scott Schmidt of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Bryan Schmidt of Chilton, Suzette (Paul) Kolaga of Lannon, WI, Rita (Steven) Timm of Princeton, WI, Jennifer (Bill) Wise of Jacksonville, FL, and Michele Lohff of Wausau; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Boyce (Bernice) Schmidt of Crivitz. Alfred was preceded in death by his two wives, Angeline Schmidt and Louise Peterson Schmidt; children, Alfred E. Schmidt and Joseph Schmidt; parents, Alfred J. and Florence Schmidt; siblings, Wilford Schmidt, Christian Schmidt, Florence ‘Sis’ Lee, Lorraine Eastburn, Agnes Basil.

The burial of Alfred’s cremated remains will take place in Springbrook Cemetery, Town of Pine River, Lincoln County, at a later date. Taylor-Stine Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Merrill, is assisting the family. The family would like to invite everyone who knew “Al” to a celebration of life Sunday, May 21st from Noon until 3:00 P.M. at the Eagle’s Club in Merrill.
