This past Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, the Badger State Games Fat Bike Race was held at the Prairie River Dells Trail Head northeast of Merrill off Hwy. 17.
Racers could choose to compete in a short, medium, or long race. The short race encompassed a 10-mile lap on rolling, flowy, scenic terrain. The medium race took racers on a 15-mile lap with some flowing terrain and a vertical loop that was one big hill after another. And the long race was a 25-mile lap of challenging, hilly terrain. “This lap adds a back country adventure over 3 ponds, 4 lakes, 6 bogs and 20 bonus hills,” the race was advertised.
Some areas of the race course were wide enough to allow for passing, while others were only wide enough for a single cyclist.
This competition required entrants to use Fat Bikes with tires at least 3.7 inches wide, and Mountain Bikes were not allowed.
The top three male and top three females in each race were awarded medals.
