The Merrill Girls Varsity Tennis Team continues to compete, focusing on developing the skills needed to form a solid Tennis Team for the future.
On Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, Wisconsin Rapids came to Merrill for some competition on the courts. Rapids won the match, 7-9, but the Merrill Girls have their eyes on the long-term.
Head Merrill Girls Volleyball Coach Brad Barton said the girls continue to improve in ways that count. “Madisin Jacobs played a superb first set today,” he said.
“Lauren Cohrs fought like a champion to almost come away with a win.”
And “Emily Frahm looked very impressive in her Junior Varsity match. Emily has played some Varsity matches this year also,” he said.
Match results in singles:
No. 1 – Corinne Sazama, Wisconsin Rapids beat Lauren Cohrs, Merrill, 6-3 , 2-6 , 6-3 ;
No. 2 – Jenna Wentland, Wisconsin Rapids beat Sarah Rell, Merrill, 6-0 , 6-2 , -;
No. 3 – Hayley Jensen, Wisconsin Rapids beat Chloe Belant, Merrill, 6-0 , 6-1 , -;
No. 4 – Julia Krueger, Wisconsin Rapids beat Madisin Jacobs, Merrill, 4-6 , 6-2 , 6-0 ;
Merrill forfeited the three doubles matches.
Box Score:
Wisconsin Rapids @ Merrill 7-0

Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Merrill Girls traveled to Stevens Point Area High School (SPASH) for a match. Despite a loss at the end of the day, the Merrill Girls showed improvements that will help Merrill in the long-term.
“Lauren Cohrs had her best match of the year,” Barton said. “She played an athletic opponent who had a lot of different spins on her shots. She had good strategy against her but ultimately it was not enough. Her and Sarah Rell still have the best records on the team. Both of them are essential to helping this team grow for the coming seasons ahead.”
Match results in singles:
No. 1 – Tatum Thielman, Stevens Point beat Lauren Cohrs, Merrill, 6-0 , 6-0 , -;
No. 2 – Rylan Woytasik, Stevens Point beat Sarah Rell, Merrill, 6-0 , 6-1 , -;
No. 3 – Addison Jandrain, Stevens Point beat Chloe Belant, Merrill, 6-0 , 6-0 , -;
No. 4 – Lily Meeks, Stevens Point beat Madisin Jacobs, Merrill, 6-0 , 6-1 , -;
Merrill forfeited the three doubles matches due to not having doubles teams to play.
