Merrill Girls Tennis Team starts off busy singles season

Aug. 22-Antigo and Wisconsin Rapids
The Antigo Red Robins played the Merrill Lady Jays at Merrill on the tennis courts on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022. Antigo took away the win with a final score Antigo 5 – Merrill 2.
Match results in singles were:
No. 1 – Sierra Oelke of Antigo defeated Lauren Cohrs of Merrill, 6-3, 6-2, -;
No. 2 – Sarah Rell of Merrill defeated Jacqueline Belling of Antigo, 6-2, 6-3, -;
No. 3 – Chloe Belant of Merrill defeated Hailey Warren of Antigo, 6-0, 6-0, -;
No. 4 – Lily Baumgardner of Antigo defeated Kaytlyn Hulke of Merrill, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 ;
Antigo took the wins in the doubles matches as all three were forfeited by Merrill due to not having doubles teams in Merrill this year.
No. 1 – Molly Neufeld/Elena Bussiere of Antigo took the win due to Merrill forfeit, 2-0, 2-0, -;
No. 2 – Anna Vandeweerd/Hailey Burhop of Antigo took the win due to Merrill forfeit, 2-0, 2-0, -;
No. 3 – Evie Trabant-mckenna/Anna Heuss of Antigo took the win due to Merrill forfeit, 2-0, 2-0, -;

The Wisconsin Rapids girls were also at Merrill Aug. 22 for matches against the Merrill ladies. Rapids took the win of Wisconsin Rapids 6 – Merrill 1.
Singles match results were:
No. 1 – Lauren Cohrs of Merrill defeated Corinne Sazama of Wisconsin Rapids, 6-1, 6-2, -;
No. 2 – Jenna Wentland of Wisconsin Rapids defeated Sarah Rell of Merrill, 6-1, 6-1, -;
No. 3 – Hayley Jensen of Wisconsin Rapids defeated Chloe Belant of Merrill, 6-0, 6-0, -;
No. 4 – Julia Krueger of Wisconsin Rapids defeated Kaytlyn Hulke of Merrill, 6-2, 6-1, -;
Doubles were a forfeit due to Merrill not having doubles teams.
No. 1 – Abbey Gust/Teagann Bondioli of Wisconsin Rapids took the win due to Merrill forfeit, 2-0, 2-0, -;
No. 2 – Aleeya Leach/Sawyer Holdberg of Wisconsin Rapids took the win due to Merrill forfeit, 2-0, 2-0, -;
No. 3 – Sydney Holberg/Chloe Trzebiatowski of Wisconsin Rapids took the win due to Merrill forfeit, 2-0, 2-0, -;

Aug. 19-Rhinelander and Luther L. Wright
On Friday, Aug. 19, the Merrill Girls Tennis Team traveled to Rhinelander where they played matches against both Rhinelander and Luther L. Wright High School.
“We really elevated our play against Rhinelander, but we fell short,” said Brad Barton, Merrill High Girls Head Tennis Coach. “Rhinelander consistently has a good team every year.”
Final score against Rhinelander was a defeat for Merrill: Rhinelander 7 – Merrill 0.

No. 1 – Tori Riopel of Rhinelander defeated Lauren Cohrs of Merrill, 6-1, 6-1, -;
No. 2 – Kelsey Winter of Rhinelander defeated Sarah Rell of Merrill, 6-1, 6-1, -;
No. 3 – Shayla Coppenger of Rhinelander defeated Chloe Belant of Merrill, 6-0, 6-3, -;
No. 4 – Dawsyn Barkus of Rhinelander defeated Kaytlyn Hulke of Merrill, 6-0, 6-0, -;
Doubles forfeitures added three automatic points to Rhinelander’s score:
No. 1 – Paige Oleinik/Taylor Riopel of Rhinelander defeated Merrill in a forfeited match, 2-0, 2-0, -;

Aug. 15-16-Wisconsin Rapids, DC Everest, Wausau Newman, Medford, and Menominee
The Merrill Girls Tennis Team played Wisconsin Rapids, DC Everest, and Wausau Newman Girls Tennis Teams on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Wausau West multi-team two-day event. Newman Catholic took the win in with a score of Newman Catholic 7 – Merrill 0.
In singles matches:
No. 1 – Ava Sukanen of Newman Catholic defeated Lauren Cohrs of Merrill, 6-3, 6-3, -;
No. 2 – Destiny Lo of Newman Catholic defeated Sarah Rell of Merrill, 6-2, 6-0, -;

“Sarah [Rell] has improved so much this year. She played the match of the year so far against Medford today winning 6-2, 7-6 (5), Barton said. “Her ground strokes are very powerful this year and she never gives up on a point.”
Final score in the Medford game: Medford 6 – Merrill 1.
