On Thursday, May 5, 2022, at the Merrill Area Recreation Complex (MARC), Merrill’s Lady Jays took on the Wausau East Lumberjacks in a Varsity Softball double-header and emerged victorious. It was a great night for the ladies and the perfect way to showcase the sport for Youth Night.
“Our first wins in Conference and our first Sweep!” said Allison Krohn, Merrill Girls Varsity Softball Head Coach.
In the first game, Merrill’s Addy Schmeltzer dominated on the mound, and Sophie Wendorf put in an inning pitching, as well. Dani Korman and Katie Heckendorf each picked up two runs, and Sophie Wendorf, Olivia Losee, Nicole Doering, and Laney Zuelsdorff each made one.
Game One Box Score:
Wausau East 1 @ Merrill 8

Game two was a tight race that took the Varsity Girls into extra innings before Merrill took the lead and the win. Merrill’s Addy Schmeltzer pitched all eight innings. East took an early lead with four runs in the first inning while Merrill only had two. Merrill had it tied up by the end of the third inning, though, picking up one run each in the second and the third. In the fourth inning, Merrill pulled ahead, bringing the score to Merrill 5 – East 4. A scoreless fifth inning. And then in the sixth, East got a run and tied it back up. The seventh inning both teams played hard but failed to score, and the game went into the eighth inning and Merrill made the winning run.
“Everyone stepped up and contributed,” Coach Krohn said. “We were loud and energetic, and I think set a really good example for all of these kiddos of what our program is about!”
Sophie Wendorf brought in two of the runs, with Olivia Losee, Laney Zuelsdorff, Olivia Pierce, and Nicole Doering each bringing in one run apiece.
Game Two Box Score:
Wausau East 5 @ Merrill 6

The Merrill Varsity Girls got to enjoy a little admiration from young ladies who very well could be the future of Merrill Varsity Girls Softball! Submitted photo.
