East Merrill Newman United Bluejacks come up short in Dec. 3 & 4 hockey games

Eagle River game against Northland Pines goes into overtime

East Merrill Newman United Bluejacks Varsity Hockey Team played a non-conference game at the Eagle River Sports Arena against the Northland Pines Eagles High School Varsity Hockey Team on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021. The Eagles scored two points in the first period, the first of which was less than two minutes into the game. But the Bluejacks’ #17 Zach Pagel also scored a point in the first, with an assist from #11 Eli Pagel and #18 Kaeden Grusnick.

In the second period, the Eagles scored another two points, but the Bluejacks made another point, as well. #17 Zach Pagel made the score with an assist from #11 Eli Pagel.

Third period saw the Bluejacks taking back the game with #17 Zach Pagel making a point with an assist from #11 Eli Pagel and then #8 Connor McCorkle of Merrill landing a second point with an assist from #18 Koeden Grusnick and #6 Parker Klebenow of Merrill.

That put the game into overtime. Ultimately the Northland Pines Eagles landed the final and winning point, ending the game with a score of 5-4.

“The boys played great,” East United Bluejacks Coach Nate Pagel said. He described the game as a “nail biter in OT” even though it was ultimately a loss. Other highlights, the Coach said, included a “First start for Freshman Connor Burton in the net. Had over 90% save percentage.” and “Connor McCorkle scored his first high school goal.”

“It was a great team effort,” Coach Pagel said.

On Dec. 3, the East Merrill Newman United Bluejacks played against the Antigo Red Robins High School Varsity Hockey Team in a non-conference game at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building in Antigo.

Antigo scored two points in the first period and another six points in the second period. Also during the second period, #12 Brody Trantow scored the single point for the Bluejacks with an assist from #6 Parker Klebenow of Merrill. Antigo went on to score another point in the third period, clinching the win for the Red Robins.

East Merrill Newman United Bluejacks Varsity Hockey Team played a non-conference game at the rink in Tomahawk’s Sara Park against the Tomahawk Hatchets Varsity Hockey Team on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The Tomahawk Hatchets scored two points in the first period, another four points in the second period, and two points in the third. The Bluejacks scored their solo point of the game during the second period. Bluejacks #27 Nick Bodner made the score, with an assist from #11 Eli Pagel.
