Girl Scout Troop 7074 kicked off their year with a meeting on Sept. 14 focused on car care. The Troop, made up of 6th through 12th graders, first went to Bob’s West 64 on Highway 64 in Merrill to learn some of the basics. They learned where to find the car’s manual and how to troubleshoot a few things using the manual, including where to find the car’s spare tire and jack, where the dipstick for checking the oil is located, and where the windshield washer fluid reservoir is located.
Then they actually did some of the basics, all hands on, including learning how to check the oil and how to add oil and windshield washer fluid if needed. They jacked up a car and located and pulled out the spare. “They got their hands dirty and changed a tire,” Troop Leader Angela Smith said.
From there, they traveled to the Cenex Pier 2 station at the corner of Pier and 2nd Streets, to learn how to properly fill an automobile’s gas tank safely and discussed key safety factors. “They each tried their hand at filling up a car,” Smith said.

Girl Scouts each take a turn learning to operate a gas pump to fuel up a car. Submitted photo.

“Everyone had fun and learned a lot,” she said.
“It’s never too late to join Girl Scouts, and there are openings at all levels for girls and adults,” Smith added. To learn more about joining Girl Scouts, call Jessica Murray at [email protected] or call 920-955-3459.
