In the Friday night, Oct. 8, football game, the Merrill Bluejays headed to Mike Webster Stadium in Rhinelander to take on the Rhinelander Hodags. Rhinelander scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and another two in the second, leading against Merrill 28 to 0 at halftime. Rhinelander picked up another touchdown in each of the next two quarters, making a clean sweep against Merrill by game end.
“The Bluejays dropped a game Friday night against a tough opponent up in Rhinelander,” Head Merrill Football Coach Jason Wadzinski said. “The Hodags ground attack was formidable and difficult to slow down. After going down early, the Merrill defense stiffened up in the second half, but couldn’t overcome the deficit. Bailey Turenne and Erik Mann had interceptions in the game for the Bluejays, and Brian Ball also put together a nice game defensively.”
Bluejay top players for the game were #5 Bailey Turenne with 51 pass yards, #25 Nathan Brzoznowski with 15 rush yards, and #3 Bradyn Pieper with 24 receiving yards.
“Merrill will look to rebound this Friday at home against Medford,” Wadzinski said. “If Merrill can squeeze out one more victory, they will be on the playoff bubble with a chance of continuing on. Friday night in Merrill will be Senior Night as well as the ‘Tackle Cancer’ fundraiser and awareness game. The Bluejays will be sporting pink special home jerseys for the event.”
