Merrill Girls Varsity Tennis Doubles Team Amelia Skoviera and Tessa Wheat have been named Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 7, 2021. Both ladies are Seniors at Merrill High School. Amelia started playing Varsity Tennis as a Freshman, and this is her second year playing Doubles, both seasons with Tessa. “I believe we are such a strong team because we are close friends,” Amelia said. “We always support and communicate with each other to stay positive and never give up on the game.” Tessa is in her second year of Varsity Tennis. “Both years I have been #1 doubles with Amelia,” Tessa said. “Amelia and I are best friends on and off the court, and no matter what happens on the court, win or loss, we have each other’s backs. She is stronger serving and at the back of the court, where I am stronger at the net, volleying, but our positive energy and attitude is what helps us come out with our wins.”
Amelia also plays Merrill Girls Varsity Soccer defense [since Junior year], is Student Representative for the MAPS Board of Education, and is involved with National Honor Society, Link Crew, the Nest, Student Council, Raise Your Voice, Junior Optimists, and the Bluejay Beat. She enjoys coaching kindergarten and 4K summer soccer, being outdoors, and spending time with her friends.
The daughter of Colleen Skoviera and Aaron Skoviera of Merrill, Amelia has a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend UW-Eau Claire next year, majoring in Elementary Education.
Tessa also plays Soccer but was a manager this year due to an injury. She is hoping to be back on the field soon and plays several positions, from goal keeper to forward. Tessa is a Big Sister at Washington School for Big Brothers Big Sisters, is Treasurer for National Honor Society, and is involved in Junior Optimist Club, Accelerated Art, the Bluejay Beat, Raise Your Voice, LEAD, and is a Link Leader. She enjoys skiing, art, relaxing watching movies and TV, spending time with her friends, and being with her family and her pets [a chihauhau named Roo, a schiperkee rat terrier mix named Riley (both were rescues), and a cat named Grizzly that they found in a tree during a snowstorm].
The daughter of Kelly Wheat and John Wheat of Merrill, Tessa has a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend UW-LaCrosse or UW-Stevens Point after high school to become a Recreational Therapist, with a minor in Art Therapy.
