On Thursday, Sept. 23, the Merrill Bluejay Cross Country Team went head-to-head with DC Everest (DCE) in a dual meet, according to Head MHS Cross Country Coach Alyssa Swan.
The course, located at DCE Senior High School, was only two miles long instead of the typical 5K which is 3.1 miles, she said.
Elizabeth Schmidt came in first place overall (11.54). Madi Crossman (14.32) came in fifth overall and was second in for the Merrill Girls, followed closely by Annie Becker (15.12) who came in 6th overall. Lily Grefe (15.40) took ninth place overall, with Olivia Pierce (15.56) taking tenth place overall. “All athletes that placed in the top ten medaled!” Swan said.
“Rounding out the girls’ top seven runners were Bre Herdt (16:20) and Brooklyn Kragenbrink (17:30).” she said.
Unfortunately, even though five Merrill girls finished in the top 10, it wasn’t quite enough to take the win and the Lady Jays lost the meet to DCE, Swan said.
The Boys Cross Country Team did narrowly beat DCE, by a single point, according to Swan.
Merrill’s David Golisch (11:18) finished second overall. Callen Hoeppner (12:48) came in fourth overall and was second in for the Merrill guys, followed by Ian Schuetze (12:09) who came in fifth overall. Henry Reiman (12:27) came in seventh overall and Kayoda Raddatz (12:44) came in ninth overall, earning them all medals.
“Rounding out the top seven runners were Kaden Schwandt (13:04), Elliott Hanson (13:16), and Caleb Norton (13:20),” Swan said.
