Comunidad hispania celebrates with authentic food and music

Normal Park was the place to enjoy authentic hispanic food from several different countries on Saturday, Sept. 18. Those who took advantage of the chance to immerse themselves in the Comunidad Hispania celebrations had the chance to grow more fluent in their Spanish, enjoy the music of a mariachi band from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids, and try a variety of traditional cuisine. Who knew tacos could be so different? The tacos available on Saturday at the festival were definitely not the Americanized version.
The event drew attendees from the hispanic community throughout central Wisconsin who enjoyed the opportunity to try authentic food they were not familiar with. “I’m from Peru,” one woman in attendance shared. “We don’t have Mexican restaurants in Peru.” She was happy to have the opportunity to try foods from other latino cultures, as well as to enjoy the traditional flavors she grew up with.
Communidad Hispania is an annual event, held each September in Merrill.
