NAMI Northwoods offers online education programs

NAMI Northwoods announces NAMI BASICS, an education programs to be held online for parents,
grandparents, and other caregivers of children and adolescents (up to age 21) who are experiencing emotional or
behavioral issues including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and others.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE JOIN US IN THE CLASS? The class covers the ‘basics’ about stigma, mental health
conditions, and current therapies. It addresses managing crises, solving problems, and communicating
effectively, as well as the impact on the whole family and need for self-care. It shares information and local
resources for navigating healthcare, school (e.g. IEPs/504s), and the juvenile justice systems. Participants develop
confidence and stamina needed to support their child with compassion. Most important, participants become a
community of people who relate to each other’s experience, provide information and support that often
continue long after class ends.

The class is taught by trained parents with lived experience. Note from the teachers:

“We know what participants are going through because we’ve been there. We like sharing this class with
others because we wish we’d taken the class earlier – it would have made a big difference for us and our
children!”

Recovery is a journey – this course provides a roadmap for parents. It turns the “I” in illness into “we” in
wellness.

There are 2 possible times for the class – we’re asking people to sign up for the one that works best for them.
If one class does not fill, we will offer the alternate time slot to parents/caregivers.
Tuesdays, Oct. 5 – Nov. 9, 2021, (6 classes) Online
Time #1:  5:30-7:30 p.m.
Time #2:  9:30-12 noon

Three in every five people are affected by a mental health condition. Those who experience mental health
conditions and their family members and loved ones may have to cope with multiple hospitalization,
employment and financial problems, suicide attempts, legal issues, poor housing options, stigma and
insufficient medical insurance. NAMI Northwoods, in conjunction with the Healthy Minds for Lincoln County,
offers classes and support groups because we recognize the impact a mental health condition can have on the
individual as well as the entire family and create a network of support.

Registration for these free courses is available by contacting [email protected] or by calling Kay
at 715-254-1864 or JoAnne at 715-846-5346.
