Thomas named to UW-Stout Women’s Cross Country Team
The University of Wisconsin-Stout announced Dalie Thomas of Merrill, a Junior who is studying health, wellness, and fitness, has been named to the University’s 2021 Women’s Cross Country Team.
UW-Stout, established in 1891, is Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, with a focus on applied learning, collaboration with business and industry, and career outcomes. The University prides itself on the success of its students in the workplace, with an employment rate above 98% for recent graduates.
Merrill’s Wardall earns spot on 2021 UW-Whitewater Volleyball roster
Morgan Wardall, a Merrill native and graduate of Merrill High School, will compete as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-W) Volleyball Team during the 2021 season, returning as a middle hitter.
Wardall is a Senior at UW-W, majoring in communication.
The UW-W volleyball team took the court officially for the first time in nearly 22 months as it started its 2021 season.
The Warhawks are the preseason favorite of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches and sports information directors to repeat as conference champions after the league’s 2020 season was canceled. UW-W has not won back-to-back titles since the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
The team is also receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Women’s Division III Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll and finished the 2019 season with a 22-10 record, including a 6-1 mark in league play during the regular season. The team reached the NCAA Tournament for the 27th time in the last 28 years that fall.
UW-Platteville names Hoff Pioneer football captain
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Football Team named six captains for the 2021 season, and Merrill’s own Drew Hoff, a Senior defensive back, was one of those six. He was one of three defensive captains.
Hoff is a graduate of Merrill High School and is majoring in health and human performance. He has played in 10 games and recorded 15 tackles, with two tackles for losses, and has broken up one pass in his football career.
“These six captains were elected by their teammates, not only for their leadership on the field but off the field,” head coach Mike Emendorfer of the Platteville Pioneers said. “They led during a very difficult time during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to be great role models for our team heading into the season.”
The Pioneers opened the 2021 season on Thursday, Sept. 2, playing against East Texas Baptist University.
UW-Eau Claire area Freshmen receive scholarships
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire said 582 incoming freshmen received scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year, with many students receiving multiple awards. Each award varies in amount and criteria. Of those students, the following area students received scholarships:
