Schmidt finishes first at Cross Country opener

Teams finish fifth and seventh

The Merrill Bluejay Cross Country Team competed in the Marathon Invite Meet that took place at Nine-Mile Recreation Area on Thursday, Sept. 2.
“The athletes were ready to compete and anxious to improve their previous race times,” Head MHS Cross Country Coach Alyssa Swan said. “We ended up coming home with 3 medals and multiple PRs! [Personal Records]”
Elizabeth Schmidt took first place overall with a time of 19:10, beating her time at the last meet by more than a full minute.
The Merrill Girls came in fifth place out of eight teams.
Other Lady Jays making their marks were Madi Crossman (24:11), exactly two full minutes faster than her time at the last meet; Emma Marlow (25:21); Annie Becker (25:26); Liv Cordova (28:31); Breannon Herdt (28:51), also nearly two full minutes faster than at the last meet; and Brooklyn Kragenbrink (29:33), more than three full minutes faster than her time at the last meet. These girls are really going full out!
David Golisch came in first for the Merrill Boys and came in fourth place overall with a time of 18:17. Callen Hoeppner came in second for Merrill and seventh overall with a time of 18:30.
The Boys Team placed fourth out of ten teams.
Finishing up for the rest of the Merrill team were Elliott Hanson (20:05), 45 seconds faster than his time at the last meet; Ian Schuetze (20:26), 47 seconds faster than his last time; Henry Reimann (20:30), shaving almost 2 full minutes off of his last time; Caleb Norton (21:42), more than 1:40 faster than his previous time; and Kayoda Raddatz (21:45), 1:17 faster than his previous time. The guys aren’t letting any grass grown under their feet either!
“Overall, it was a great race day!” Coach Swan said.
