A press release issued by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office stated the Department had received information just after noon on Tuesday, July 13, that a 40-year-old Rhinelander man was being sought by the Vilas County Sheriff.
“The suspect had a warrant issued for his arrest after his bail was revoked in a pending felony criminal matter in that county,” the statement said.
“That criminal matter involved two counts of sexual assault of a child. Further, the Vilas County Sheriff advised the suspect had removed an electronic monitoring device by cutting off and throwing away an ankle bracelet while in Rhinelander.”
Later that day, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a Lincoln County Deputy spotted the wanted man traveling on State Rd. 64 in the Town of Pine River and radioed in. The Department positioned additional squad cars and then attempted a traffic stop on US Hwy. 51 south of Merrill.
The suspect fled and then entered Marathon County, where several attempts were made to use tire deflation devices on the man’s vehicle, which was eventually successful near mile marker 183, the release said.
During the pursuit, speeds “never exceeded 72 MPH and traffic remained light to moderate,” the release stated.
The suspect was turned over to a Vilas County Deputy north of Tomahawk immediately afterward, on the felony warrant, and additional charges related to the chase will be filed in Lincoln County Court.
